100 Feedback!

I am obsessed with feedback.  As most designers/artists are, I am proud of my work but it’s never perfect.  The design is always missing “something” so I’m always dying to know what people think of their necklaces when they get them and more importantly if the babies liked them.  Did they help them focus while feeding?  Do they make “ooh” and “aah” sounds when they play with it?

So I spend probably half of my time on the internet constantly checking my feedback # to see if it went up and then have to read what the person wrote.  I’ve been very blessed that my feedback has been amazing so far.

AND… I’ve just hit 100, 100% positive feedback on Etsy!  Yay!  Of course, some of that is stuff that I’ve purchased but that’s okay.  The stuff that I’ve bought on Etsy have all been amazing gifts to people I love (including me!).  But I have had 149 sales on Etsy so there are plenty of people that have forgotten to give me feedback.  I hope they remember!

My eBay feedback is just as obsessive but now it’s not so much the number (which is currently at 466) but I’m dying to get to 500.  The sales that would get me to 500 would be great but that’s when my star changes.  (insert giddy dance here.)  Ridiculous, I know but as they say, sometimes it’s the little things in life that make you happy.

So to all of you wonderful people reading this, I would like to offer you 10% off of your order in my stores (not including shipping or taxes).  Just write in “woo hoo” in your “notes to seller” and when your PayPal

payment is complete, I will refund your 10%!

Thank you to all of you who’ve made the first 100 possible and to all of you who will help me with the second 100! (or my next star, whichever comes first).

Don’t forget to shop Etsy!

And my store!

Coloring Outside of the Lines

When it comes to Nursing Necklaces, you’ll notice most of them are very similar. Most have newborn styles (black, white & red), which are fantastic and designed according to how their eyesight develops. Then there’s the rainbows, primary colors, pinks for the girls, blues for the boys.

As much fun as it is to make the “normal” designs, I knew there must be more that can be done with Nursing Necklaces that haven’t been done before. I’ve already talked about the theme necklaces that I’ve done… ladybugs, bumblebees, baseball etc., but I’ve wanted to go even beyond that.

So with that, I’d like to introduce my Christmas & Halloween Nursing Necklaces, which I love and think they’re so cute!

I know… so cute! The reindeer is my favorite!

You probably can’t see all of the little goodies that I’ve hidden in there for those little fingers to find. Let me help you with a few little pictures…

I also had the pleasure to create a necklace for a wonderful mom who wanted a Pirate themed necklace. I would probably never have thought of making this necklace but it turned out so fantastically rockin (not real words, I’m sure), that I’ve listed it in my stores! Thanks Tigermommy!

My other new news is that I’m now a new member of  !

Go Team!

What exactly does this mean?  Just go to www.etsy.com and search for etsykids and you can find some amazing unique designs for your little people!  Or you can just start at my store and go from there!  www.SnapdragonDesign.etsy.com

Why can’t I make my own nursing necklace?

Although it would seem very easy to just make your own nursing necklace since it’s really just some plastic beads strung on string, it seems very easy and hey, thousands are made at summer camp every year! But if you’re concerned about safety, that enjoy the fruits of my labor. I have put a lot of research before attempting to make my necklaces. Not only safety, which is everyone’s #1 concern but also what babies need to keep their attention because, let’s face it, if they’re bored then the necklace is useless.

Let’s start with safety…

Each necklace has a safety bead (used as the clasp) that “pops” open if the baby yanks on the necklace hard enough without breaking it. Then simply “pop” it back into place again! These are more practical than a magnetic clasp because they do not release nearly as easily and mommy won’t have to struggle with putting it back on over and over with each yank while baby is feeding.

  • The cord (not string or wire) that each necklace is strung on is a fabulous hi-tech material that is naturally waterproof and resists 100% of the sun’s damaging ultraviolet radiation. It’s 10 times stronger than steel, with superior abrasion resistance so baby can twirl, spin and rub those beads back and forth as much as she’d like without worry about wearing it down.
  • The beads… only plastic, acrylic or lucite beads are used. There are an unbelievable amount of gorgeous glass beads out there that would look perfect on these necklace but I don’t use them simply because they break and chip leaving a jagged edge that mom may not see. I do not use wooden beads because they tend to splinter over time, again leaving sharp edges that are no fun for little fingers

Now the fun part…

  • NEWBORN PEEPERS – A newborn baby to approximately 3 months of age can only see shadows and very high contrasting shapes like a simple happy face :) . Then at the 3 month mark the first color they start to see is RED. I have a line specifically designed for these chubby little creatures that are filled with contrasting blacks, whites & grays so when they nurse (or bottle feed), the necklace is close to those little peepers and the fun begins! Some of these necklaces are accented with RED or fun accent colors like GREEN, PURPLE, PINK & BLUE to reflect the mom, dad or baby’s personality.
  • COLOR IT! I like to use as many fun colors, textures, sizes and shapes that I can in each necklace. They say you should read to your baby from day 1 so they learn to love learning from the start. If reading to your baby can do that, imagine what a nursing necklace filled with a rainbow of colors, and feeling smooth, or bumpy beads between little fingers at each feeding would do. Wonderful for their cognitive and tactile development! The amount of beads that you would need to buy to have a good variety to keep his interest is, well lets just say, a lot… Someday I’ll get courageous and post a picture of my workspace so you can see how many I have.
  • PERSONALIZE IT! 80% of the necklaces I make have a phrase or the name of the little munchkin it’s going to on it. I’ve put everything from Princess to Psalm 139 (which, if you have time should look up – it’s beautiful) on each hand-crafted necklace. Long after the nursing relationship is over, your necklace is a wonderful keepsake for many years to come to remember mommy and baby’s special time together.
  • THE TODDLER IN YOU – As your monkey grows (it’s inevitable, as much as we want them to stay teeny and keep those chubby legs), each necklace turns into a wonderful “I SPY” toy for church or quiet waiting rooms. “Find mommy the green bead”. I have a great line of Alphabet song(TM) nursing (you’re singing in your head, aren’t you?) to help necklaces that have all of the letters separated the way the song is sung. “A,B,C,D,E,F,G… H,I,J,K… junior learn his alphabet even when out and about!
  • DIAPER DISTRACTION – Any parent or caregiver that has ever tried to diaper a baby that’s learning how to roll, crawl or even worse… walk knows how hard it is to get a diaper on! Especially if you’ve got them on one of those fold-down thingies in Wal Mart or a restaurant and the belt is broken and it’s a long way down for them to fall so you’ve got one hand on their torso holding them down and the other is trying to position the diaper under the constantly moving butt. I am going through this right now and it’s not easy! Wearing your nursing necklace are great to keep your cutie’s (like all of these nicknames I’m using?) interest in one place while you hurry to fasten the belts!

The best part is… if you have a specific idea in mind, chances are I can make it happen for you! I’ve made some great necklaces for mommies that wanted something specific. One mommy loved bumble bees… another wanted one for a lady bug themed baby shower… one wanted one to match her friend’s Dallas Cowboys themed bedroom… a baseball theme necklace because mom and dad were huge fans and one yellow and green simply because those were mom’s favorite colors together.

The moms that I have had the pleasure to meet while making these necklaces are the best part. Some have husbands that have been deployed, some needed a necklace for their baby to stay focused on a plane and at Disney World (so much to look at there!) and one mom I met actually sketched a little logo for me in return for a couple of necklaces for her daughters and one for her. She named him “Snappy” and I absolutely love the name and will continue to use it. Wait till you see him (when I make a freaking decision on his colors!), he is absolutely adorable!

It’s amazing to see how this little business is growing up around me. Not only am I selling in 2 Crabtree & Evelyn stores but I’m selling through the webstore doudoubebe.com, which is the biggest supporter of La Leche of Canada (breastfeeding support), I am now lucky enough to have companies come to me. Last week I had breastfeeding-magazine.com come to me and ask if I’d be willing to sell on their site. Right now, I’m getting pictures together for her to list and should be up and running in a couple of weeks!

I’m also constantly adding to my line to help breastfeeding moms any way I can. My next line are breastfeeding bracelets, which will help mom keep track of baby (or babies if there’s more than one) next feeding or their last feeding, which side they fed on last, or it can be used as a kick counter, what time to administer medicine to herself or someone else or simply use it as an appointment reminder. Not only that but I think they’re quite “blingy” and funky looking, which adds to the new mom glow.

The New Products I Promised!

I think I’ve mentioned in most of my blog entries about new products that I will be carrying. I finally have some of them listed! Yay!

My first line are Eternity Nursing Necklaces. They are a wonderful addition to the nursing necklaces that I currently hand make that are designed to be all about developing baby’s senses. These are designed to be strong enough to use as a nursing necklace but to make mommy feel beautiful, and isn’t that what most mommies need? Eternity necklaces can be worn with or without a baby on your hip and last long after the nursing relationship is done. But the best part is, they’re not just for mommy, they’re a perfect gift for any caretaker that spends their days surrounded by kiddies, grandma, auntie, your neighbor or that teen that seems to have EVERYTHING would love the Glow-in-the-dark Eternity Necklace!

My next new product are my Emergency Bracelets designed for all of the little people in your life. This is a great bracelet for mom & dad’s peace of mind. When out and about, have your little guy wear this bracelet, which features YOUR cell phone number! Let’s hope it never gets used but if your little guy somehow gets lost in the crowd at Disney or even at the mall, instead of relying on a store intercom, you can be called directly to know exactly where he is! I’M LOST! CALL MY MOMMY!

Similar concept to the Emergency Bracelets are my Allergy Bracelets.  Take off the phone number and add “NO NUTS” or “NO FLOUR” or whatever ails your monkey to the bracelet so when your little one is at school or a friend’s birthday party, they wear a cool little gem that tells the world what could potentially harm them!

Having an allergy has never been so cool!

I have some currently listed in my Etsy store:  SnapdragonDesign.etsy.com but will be constantly listing new ones as I get them made so stay tuned or just send me an email (snapdragondesignhouse@yahoo.ca) if you had something in mind, I’d love to design it for you!

Do themed products sell better?

Selling jewelry online is a tricky thing to do. It sounds pretty simple and you think your designs are fabulous but when I went to the eBay university (yes, I actually went) and the instructor asked everyone who was planning on selling jewelry to raise their hands, he said it was the most difficult thing to sell. Why? Because EVERYONE is selling it. The competition is fierce! Let’s face it even the dollar stores have some great stuff nowadays. So why am I selling jewelry? I’d like to think that what I sell is unique and unusual and what you can’t find in any store. Children’s jewelry is just plain ‘ol fun too. The colors are fabulous and really, you have to think like a kid. This comes easier for some ;)

So to my point. Themed products. Do they sell better? Again, I think so. Who doesn’t love to look at the beautifully extravagant tiaras for weddings or those adorable reindeer pins that have noses that blink for Christmas (even if you don’t wear them, you secretly love them don’t you?). A cowboy themed outfit for a baby boy complete with boots and instead of a 10 gallon hat, a 10 ounce hat.

How do I incorporate a theme in a product like nursing necklaces? Oh you just wait and see. I’ve got Halloween, fall and Christmas themes up my sleeve. Many moms who buy my necklaces are for their little angels that are having a tough time keeping them focused on eating and are frustrated but don’t want to wean them just yet. But as many moms buy them for their own babies, just as many buy for friends who just had a baby or are going to baby showers. That’s where the themes come in. Have a baby due before Halloween? How much fun would a nursing necklace be with little bats on it? Babies don’t know they’re flying rodents, they just know that they’re fun spinny things!

I’ve had customers specifically request theme necklaces. One was having a ladybug baby shower, so I made a necklace to match! A baseball themed necklace because it matched the baby’s room. A bumblebee theme simply because she loved bumblebees. All of these are now part of my product lines and can be seen in my Etsy store. Why? Because they’re cute and if one person wanted them, why wouldn’t another?

Hey, look at Google. I love seeing what fun stuff they do to the Google logo. (I really need to get new hobbies). Themes are fun and unusual and the best part is they are changing all the time. Try to copy that Fisher Price!

I have some fun holiday designs up my sleeve for fall (my very favorite season), Halloween & Christmas.  I plan to challenge the theory that theme products sell well because they’re fun!  I have had a blast designing them so I hope you get as much joy out of watching your little ones eyes light up when they see them.

My Favourite Things

There are an unbelievable products out there now from pregnancy and beyond! The pure imagination and creativity of parents and quite simply people’s love of babies have created products that we just can’t imagine life without now.

I’ve picked out a few sellers that carry items that I would have loved to have used when I was pregnant (maybe for the next one?!).

The first one is a seller on Etsy called Jellybean Apparel. Maternity themed clothing for the entire family! That’s right… even dad!! My personal fave…

Check out her store: JellybeanApparel.etsy.com

My next fave is for the baby shower. My mom wanted to make me one of these for my shower and quickly gave up – too bad she didn’t know about Simply Delicious Diaper Cakes! We knew we were having a girl so this would’ve been perfect!

The “Princess” on the front is a wooden wall hanging! How funky is that?

Here’s her store: http://stores.ebay.ca/Simply-Delicious-Diaper-Cakes

My next choice is for the pregnant mom. Everything she gets (including birthday presents – trust me on this one) is “for the baby”. As great as that is and as cute as the stuff is, mom’s feet are ballooning at a rapid rate, she farts when it’s the most inappropriate times (not her fault) and hasn’t slept in weeks. Why not give HER something to make her feel that little bit better? My new fave (if I could eat it, I WOULD!) is Cozy Moments body frosting! One of the very sweetest sellers that you could ever meet and one of the best products EVER! Extremely reasonable prices AND a massive selection that no mom could say no to.

The crazy part is that she and her husband hand make all of their products in their own home!

Her shop is: CozyMoments.etsy.com

So now you’re designing the baby’s room. So many people now are personalizing the baby’s room with those kits that have all of the bedding, lamps, wallpaper etc. to match with a safari, cowboy or princess type of theme. I found a lovely lady who can create a wall decoration to your specifications. Your child’s name, in your color theme, a favorite quote or whatever you can imagine. I had her make up this one for my daughter’s room:

She made it a beautiful off-white to go on my daughter’s chocolate brown walls (with pink and off-white accents). I know… SO cute! Dr. Seuss and his wisdom will live forever. Her store is: ScribbleIt.etsy.com

Let’s just jump right into the baby clothes because, let’s face it, they’re friggin cute. I SO wish I had the money to buy my daughter a ton of these but her grandma works right beside a children’s clothing store and she’s a little obsessed so needless to say, I don’t need any more clothes. But I’ve been staring at these for a while now and need to share them with you. She makes tutus for babies! I personally love this one…

Couldn’t you just die???

Her store is: knottybabywear.etsy.com

I bought two pairs of these shoes for my little girl and absolutely love them! The shoelaces on the converse booties were great because she couldn’t kick them off but let’s face it… I bought them because they are cute! She’s even got fireman booties!

She is a wonderful seller too… I wanted the Mary Janes but she didn’t have the size I needed listed so I asked and she made a pair right away just for me! Her store is: kraftyladykreations.etsy.com

I know I’m jumping ahead to the older kids but I have a niece that’s turning 4 in August and I’m getting her a

Nightmare Snatcher for her birthday. I wish these were around when I was little! You just write your fears in

your Nightmare Snatcher’s journal, close it up tight and the Snatcher helps you face your fears and makes them disappear!

This store is: Spiderbite.etsy.com

I was also thinking of getting her a tooth fairy pillow. What is the going rate now for the tooth fairy? When I was young it was a quarter. My neighbor tells me it’s up to $2.50!! What???

Anyhow, my niece is a princess (or so she tells me) and I think she would love this in her room while she loses all of those teeth. What an cute keepsake too. I still have my tooth fairy pillow my mom made for

me. I actually think she still has the teeth in a jar somewhere. But that’s just gross… I’m sure you don’t want any more info on that.

Should I advertise my own products here too? Sure… why not? They’re great for the nursing mom and baby. When babies are aware of their surroundings, they get distracted VERY easily and my nursing necklaces are designed to keep baby eating while playing and learning. Their little eyes take in all of the colors, shapes while their little fingers feel all of the textures and spin the spinners! A lot of babies end up weaning themselves because they get too distracted and nursing necklaces

are perfect to help the breastfeeding relationship last a long time.

Then as baby grows up, they become an “I Spy” toy! Have them find the green bead or use the “Alphabet Song” necklace to teach them the alphabet. The letters are separated as you would sing the song!

My store is: SnapdragonDesign.etsy.com

Well, that’s all I’ve got for today. Really, I could go on for a loooong time but I can hear my daughter waking up and my head is still in a towel (don’t worry, I’m dressed).

If anyone has any favorites that they MUST tell the world they’ve found OR have a product that is the coolest thing ever, let me know!

Happy 4th of July everybody!

100 Sales on Etsy!

I am pleased to announce that I have hit 100 sales on Etsy this week! My 100th sale was for a lovely lady who had me create a nursing necklace just for her son. She wanted a baseball themed necklace and I hadn’t done one before and I must say, I love how it turned out (obviously, so did she!).

I still remember posting my first few items and checking my listings every 5 minutes to see if anyone has purchased anything yet. Now I’ve hit 100 sales and I am just baffled as to fast the time has gone. When I think about physically making that many necklaces & bracelets, it’s amazing.

I’ve met so many fantastic people over my time on eBay and Etsy. Baseball Nursing Breastfeeding NecklaceOne of my customers has actually made up a logo for me out of the kindness of her own heart! (I’m sure I can compensate with a few necklaces for her!). It’s an adorable dragon called Snappy. Stay tuned for the unveiling!

It hasn’t been easy but it sure has been fun. With more orders and repeat customers, I’m able to expand my product lines. Soon I will be adding Mommy Nursing Necklaces, which are stylish for mom but functional for baby and Breastfeeding / Kick Counter Reminder Bracelets, which I wished I knew about when I was breastfeeding! They’re a staple for any breastfeeding mom as well as beautiful to wear.

You know, I’ve heard so much lately “you HAVE to have a blog if you’re going to be in business!”. I kept thinking, when am I going to have time to do a blog? But now that I’ve started, it’s actually quite therapeutic to sit and let people know what’s going on. So thank you for reading my therapy session!

Oooh Competition!

e-commerce

e-commerceSo far I’ve been pretty lucky in what I sell because it’s a relatively new product and one that is being accepted with open arms but don’t have many suppliers yet. So it’s been pretty easy to keep up with my competition and see what they have on the market and trying to think up ways to be different and keep the wonderful customers I’ve worked so hard to find. My newest way of doing this was sending business cards out with customer orders giving them 10% off their next purchase. I sent out my first card less than 2 weeks ago and already I’ve had a lovely lady return to purchase 2 necklaces with her discount. I’ve seen on message boards business owners asking what they should send with their purchases to show customers appreciation. Although most are great ideas, I can’t help but think of them as wedding favors. You may get the little mints in a tulle baggie attached to 1 wine glass but once the mints are gone (if you even like them), what are you going to do with 1 wine glass when you get home?

Then there is the competition’s products. Fortunately for me but unfortunately for them, a lot of people don’t know how to take photographs. I’m certainly not any professional photographer by any means but I’d like to think that my pictures give you the best visual description of my products as possible. Most competitors photos are blurry, too far away from the product or simply taken with the product lying on their bedspread or floor. Yuck. Who wants to buy a nursing necklace if they know it’s been on someone’s floor? Not to mention some of the products that they produce makes you laugh because they’re so bad that they don’t even compare to yours. But wait… look at their feedback! They’ve sold some! Why? What is it that people liked that made them purchase? Don’t ever think that anyone is not a threat to you.

Then there’s the competition that do have fantastic products and you kick yourself because you hadn’t thought of it first. Then you start obsess on finding an idea that will give you the same leg-up that they have. I just keep my mind open at all times. Color combinations, add-ons that make the necklaces more interesting or simply just thinking like a kid (that’s the best part!).

What am I… Wonder Woman??

Supermom

How am I going to do it all? What have I started? What the $#@* was I thinking?

These are the questions I ask myself daily. Usually followed by a little panic attack. You know… rapid breathing, dizziness, racing thoughts. When I initially thought of starting my own business, I thought what a perfect way to stay home with my kids… doing something I love and being my own boss! I can go to lunch with a friend any time during the week if I want to! Life will be grand! SO not the case!

Currently I am on mat leave until the end of August. So right now, I have my days free and when I don’t have any necklace orders I have so much extra time on my hands, which seems good but then I think… no orders, no money! No payment on the Visa card!

BUT then I have the days when I have a lot of orders and think… when the $#@% am I going to get all of this done?? I have to feed Regan, get her down for her nap, do those dishes that friggin stink… have I showered today??

Somehow, it all gets done. And truthfully, I love it. I’m just a natural worrier. Lucky Kevin. He’s my fantastic husband that listens to all of my melt-downs and blames himself because he thinks he’s not helping out as much as he should. Not the case. Sometimes I just need to vent and I think that if I vent to Regan, it may freak out the 9 month old. So Kevin’s the lucky one.

When I get my orders done and mailed, it’s such a great feeling. Especially when I get feedback from my customers about how the necklaces have helped their little ones and how much they love to play with them! I love it when the stores I’m selling in call me to say they’ve sold out and need more immediately! So gratifying really.

So here I sit while Regan’s napping with my head in a towel and I really should dry it before she wakes up so I’ll say ciao for now and tell you all to visit my store and please don’t worry about keeping me too busy. Remember, secretly, I love it.
